Facebook to expand offices in Seattle

[Published Nov 2011 and updated July 2023] The social networking giant Facebook has announced it will open a new area of office space in Seattle, Washington.

Facebook has said it will almost double its office space presence in the city with a switch to a site comprising a total of 27,000 sqft at 1730 Minor Avenue.

A statement on the Facebook page for the company’s Seattle-based staff said: “We’re excited to announce that we’re moving to a new office space in downtown Seattle early next year. This move will give us room to keep growing as we continue hiring the best engineers we can find.”

The fast-growing web-based technology phenomenon first opened an office in Seattle in mid-2010 with just a handful of employees. That number has since swelled to several dozen and expectations are for there to be at least a 200-strong Facebook workforce operating out of offices in the city before the end of next year.

Facebook’s growth as a company has been remarkable since its founding in 2004 and its need for office space in the US and elsewhere has been expanding along with its revenues and employee numbers.

In February, it announced plans to relocate its headquarters from Palo Alto in California to another site in the same state. In the same month, the company said it would soon be opening a new area of office space in Hong Kong, having already done so in Singapore, with the aim of expanding its presence as a business and a brand in Asia.

Editor’s notes: As of July 2023, Facebook were no longer in occupation at 1730 Minor Avenue, also known as Met Park East and there were 17 office suites available to rent at the property totalling 249,644 square feet.

Flex space operator WeWork had offered flexible office space and workspace solutions over 7 floors of the 20-storey building for a period, however, as of July 2023, it no longer did.

In 2021, it was announced that Facebook had agreed on a pre-lease deal to rent office space in the Spring District development in Bellevue, Washington which is close to Seattle. The deal secured Block 5 which is an 11-story, 345,000-square-foot office building scheduled to open in 2023.

In October 2021, the Facebook company was rebranded as Meta whilst the original social media platform retained the Facebook name.
