Manchester mixed-use building approved

[Published March 2011 and last updated July 2026] The North West Development Agency (NWDA) has accepted a bid to turn a former mill workers’ hostel into office space.

Developer Northern Group also intends to install residential units, a gym, a swimming pool and a nursery in Jactin House, on the corner of Hood Street and Murray Street in Ancoats.

The Victorian five-storey, 40,000-square-foot building will primarily serve as office space for start-ups seeking to expand.

Office suites in the new building will have private balconies and sustainable heating and cooling technologies. The basement will include a café and deli.

Nathan Ezair, Northern Group Director, commented: “We have successfully operated business spaces within the area for the past 10 years and the majority of the companies that locate to Ancoats love it here.

“The space we offer has more character than other buildings, it is generally cheaper, and we offer plentiful car parking provision too. The problem lies where businesses outgrow their offices and want larger provision – we don’t want to see Ancoats lose them so we came up with a solution.”

Mark Hughes, the Chief Executive of the NWDA, described Jactin House as “full of character” and added that the development will create jobs in the area and provide high-quality business space.

Ancoats has been called “the world’s first industrial suburb” and is generally considered one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution.

When the cotton industry slumped in the 1930s, the mills based in Ancoats steadily declined, and the area became run-down and an infamous centre of crime and deprivation.

In 1989, Manchester City Council designated much of Ancoats as a conservation area, which made regeneration more difficult. In 1990, the Eastside Regeneration organisation was formed to try and regenerate the area.

Editor’s notes: Northern Group were instrumental in the regeneration of Manchester’s Ancoats Urban Village.

The refurbishment of Jactin House was successfully completed and, as of June 2023, offered a wide range of serviced offices of different sizes, meeting rooms, co-working space, and one of the most popular rooftop terrace event spaces in Manchester.

As of July 2026, Northern Group continued to offer a wide range of flexible workspace options at Jactin House and also had its head office there.

In February 20206, it was reported that the residential arm of Northern Group had lodged plans with Manchester and Stockport councils to develop an area that straddles both counties, known as Secret Lake, to deliver 200 homes.
